Plant Mover / Plant Driving

CPCS A68 | NPORS N132 | In-House Training

Entra Training provides Plant Mover and Plant Driving training and testing for people who need to safely move different types of construction plant without carrying out the machine’s normal operational duties.

Courses are suitable for plant hire staff, fitters, mechanics, yard personnel and others who need to move plant safely around sites, yards, workshops or depots.

Training Options

  • Novice: 2 days
  • Experienced: 1 day
  • Test only: Available for suitably experienced candidates
  • CPCS A68
  • NPORS N132
  • In-house certification
Plant Mover Training | CPCS A68 & NPORS N132

Plant Mover training is designed for people who need to start, travel, manoeuvre, position and park different types of plant machinery without carrying out their normal working functions.

This could include moving excavators, dumpers, rollers, loading shovels and other suitable construction plant around a yard, depot or site.

The course focuses on safe machine movement rather than activities such as excavating, lifting, loading or compacting.

What Will You Learn?

Training can include:

  • Operator responsibilities and safe working practices
  • Identifying different types of construction plant
  • Machine components and basic controls
  • Manufacturer’s operating information
  • Pre-use checks and defect reporting
  • Safe access and egress
  • Starting and stopping procedures
  • Preparing machines for movement
  • Travelling wheeled and tracked plant
  • Forward and reverse manoeuvring
  • Travelling on slopes and varying surfaces
  • Manoeuvring within restricted areas
  • Blind spots and visibility
  • Ground conditions and machine stability
  • Positioning machines safely
  • Parking and isolation procedures
  • Safe shutdown and securing of plant
  • Understanding the limitations of the Plant Mover role

Where applicable, CPCS A68 can also cover the safe movement of plant onto and off transporters.

How Will You Be Tested?

The assessment will depend on whether you choose CPCS, NPORS or in-house certification.

Candidates will normally be assessed on both their theoretical knowledge and practical ability to safely move different types of plant.

The practical assessment can include:

  • Completing pre-use checks
  • Identifying machine controls
  • Preparing plant for movement
  • Travelling forwards and backwards
  • Manoeuvring wheeled and tracked plant
  • Travelling over varying surfaces and gradients
  • Manoeuvring within restricted areas
  • Positioning machinery correctly
  • Parking and isolating the machine
  • Safely shutting down and securing the plant

Where the applicable CPCS A68 option is selected, assessment can also include loading and unloading plant from a transporter.

Choose Your Certification

CPCS A68 – Plant Driving
For candidates requiring CPCS certification to safely drive and manoeuvre plant for non-operational purposes.

NPORS N132 – Plant Mover
NPORS Plant Mover – Non-Operational Duties training and assessment for people required to reposition construction plant without carrying out normal operational activities.

In-House Training
Suitable for employers who require their employees to be trained and assessed to safely move plant within their own workplace without requiring a CPCS or NPORS card.

Course Requirements

Novice

No previous Plant Mover qualification is required.

Candidates will be trained in the basic controls and safe movement of the types of plant included within the course.

Experienced

Suitable for candidates who already have practical experience safely moving different types of construction plant.

Test-Only Candidates

Candidates should already be competent in carrying out pre-use checks, travelling, manoeuvring, positioning and safely shutting down the types of plant they are required to move.

Candidates should bring suitable PPE and any identification or documentation requested when booking.

Important – What Does Plant Mover Training Cover?

Plant Mover and Plant Driving training is for non-operational movement of plant.

It does not replace the relevant machine operator qualification where someone is required to use the machine for its normal work activity.

For example, a Plant Mover may be trained to reposition a 360 excavator, but would require the appropriate excavator qualification if they were expected to excavate, grade or load materials.

If you are unsure which qualification you require, Entra Training can advise you before booking.

CSCS & Health and Safety

Candidates following the CPCS A68 route will need to meet the applicable CPCS health, safety and card requirements.

Candidates taking the applicable NPORS CSCS card route will also need to meet the relevant NPORS health and safety requirements.
