Plant & Vehicle Marshaller

Plant & Vehicle Marshaller

CPCS A73 | NPORS C133 | In-House

Entra Training provides Plant and Vehicle Marshaller training for operators and site personnel who are responsible for safely directing the movement of plant and vehicles.

Training is available for novice and experienced candidates, with test-only options available for suitably experienced individuals.

Courses are available at our Wetherby training centre or can be delivered on customer sites where suitable facilities are available.

Training Options

Novice: 1–3 days
Experienced: 1 day
Test only: Available for suitably experienced candidates

Course duration may vary depending on candidate numbers, previous experience and the certification route selected.

About the Course

The Plant and Vehicle Marshaller course provides candidates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely guide and control the movement of plant and vehicles within a workplace.

Plant and vehicle movements can present significant risks, particularly where operators have restricted visibility or are working close to pedestrians, structures or other equipment.

Candidates will learn how to establish safe systems of communication, position themselves correctly and guide operators through manoeuvres using recognised signals.

The course combines theory and practical training, with candidates carrying out realistic marshalling exercises.

What Will You Learn?

Training will typically cover:

  • The role and responsibilities of a Plant and Vehicle Marshaller
  • Relevant health and safety requirements
  • Site traffic management arrangements
  • Identifying hazards within the working area
  • Pedestrian and vehicle segregation
  • Restricted areas and exclusion zones
  • Operator blind spots and visibility limitations
  • Selecting a safe position from which to marshal
  • Recognised hand signals
  • Effective communication with operators
  • Use of radios where appropriate
  • Agreeing signals before vehicle movements begin
  • Guiding plant and vehicles forwards
  • Guiding plant and vehicles in reverse
  • Manoeuvring through restricted areas
  • Working around fixed structures and obstructions
  • Parking and positioning vehicles safely
  • Maintaining control of the working area
  • Emergency procedures
  • Completing work safely

Practical training gives candidates the opportunity to develop confidence directing different vehicle movements while maintaining clear communication with the operator.

How Will You Be Tested?

Assessment requirements depend on the certification route selected.

Candidates will normally complete a combination of:

  • Theory or knowledge assessment
  • Pre-use assessment of the working area
  • Practical marshalling exercises
  • Correct use of recognised hand signals
  • Safe positioning
  • Effective communication with the operator
  • Guiding vehicles forwards and in reverse
  • Manoeuvring vehicles through restricted areas

Candidates must demonstrate that they can safely control plant and vehicle movements while maintaining awareness of surrounding hazards.

Choose Your Certification

CPCS A73 Plant and Vehicle Marshaller

The CPCS A73 route is suitable for candidates who require CPCS certification for working within the construction industry.

Candidates complete the required CPCS theory and practical testing.

NPORS C133 Plant and Vehicle Marshaller

The NPORS C133 route provides recognised Plant and Vehicle Marshaller training and assessment.

NPORS certification options are available depending on the candidate’s requirements and existing qualifications.

In-House Plant and Vehicle Marshaller

In-house certification is available for companies requiring Plant and Vehicle Marshaller training for employees working within their own organisation or workplace.

This can be particularly suitable where a CPCS or NPORS card is not required.

Course Requirements

Novice Candidates

No previous marshalling experience is required.

The novice course is designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and practical experience required to develop safe Plant and Vehicle Marshaller skills.

Experienced Candidates

Experienced candidates should already have practical experience directing plant or vehicle movements and a good understanding of site safety.

The experienced course concentrates on refreshing existing knowledge, correcting unsafe practices and preparing candidates for assessment.

Test Only

Test-only options are available for suitably experienced candidates who already have the required knowledge and practical ability.

Candidates should be confident carrying out the full Plant and Vehicle Marshaller role without additional training.

Plant & Vehicle Marshaller or Slinger Signaller?

A Plant and Vehicle Marshaller is responsible for directing the movement of plant and vehicles around a workplace.

This is different from a Slinger Signaller, who is trained to work with lifting equipment, attach and detach loads and provide signals to lifting equipment operators during lifting operations.

Candidates involved with suspended loads may therefore require separate Slinger Signaller training.

CSCS & Health and Safety

Candidates completing CPCS testing must meet the relevant CPCS health and safety requirements before testing.

Requirements for NPORS candidates will depend on the certification route selected.

If you are unsure which health and safety qualification or test you require, contact us before booking and we can advise you on the appropriate route.

Training Location

Plant and Vehicle Marshaller training is available at our Wetherby training centre.

On-site training can also be arranged for companies with multiple candidates, provided a suitable training area, plant or vehicles and appropriate facilities are available.
