About the Course
This course gives operators the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a lorry loader or vehicle-mounted loader crane.
Training covers preparing and setting up the crane, understanding lifting capacities, safely lifting and placing loads and securing the loader crane for travel.
What Will You Learn?
Training can include:
- Operator responsibilities and safe working practices
- Lorry loader components and controls
- Pre-use checks and defect reporting
- Setting up the vehicle and crane
- Ground conditions and machine stability
- Correct use of stabilisers and outriggers
- Understanding rated capacity and lifting information
- Load weights and centres of gravity
- Lifting accessories
- Safe lifting techniques
- Slewing and controlling suspended loads
- Placing loads accurately
- Loading and unloading the vehicle
- Working at different radii
- Working safely around overhead hazards
- Securing loads for transport
- Folding, stowing and securing the crane
- Safe shutdown procedures
The CPCS A36 standard includes machine setup, stability, lifting at different radii, load placement, boom extensions, lifting accessories and securing the crane and loads.
How Will You Be Tested?
The assessment will depend on whether you choose CPCS, NPORS or in-house certification.
You will normally be assessed on both your theoretical knowledge and practical operating ability.
The practical assessment can include:
- Completing pre-use checks
- Positioning the vehicle correctly
- Setting the stabilisers
- Preparing the crane for lifting
- Selecting and using appropriate lifting accessories
- Lifting different types of loads
- Controlling load movement
- Working at different radii
- Placing loads accurately
- Loading and unloading the vehicle
- Securing loads
- Stowing and securing the crane for travel
The current CPCS A36 practical test includes lifting and placing different loads, working through the crane’s radius and safely securing the loader crane and vehicle after use.
Choose Your Certification
CPCS A36
For operators requiring CPCS certification to operate a lorry loader. CPCS A36 has endorsements covering hook, clamshell bucket and hydraulic clamp configurations.
NPORS N107
NPORS Lorry Loader training and testing, with traditional and CSCS-logo card routes available depending on your requirements. NPORS currently lists N107 as the Lorry Loader category.
In-House Training
Suitable for employers who require lorry loader operator training and certification without a CPCS or NPORS card.
